cleopatra-island Cleopatra Island
Known as cedreae in antiquity, the city whose vestiges can still be seen on the island was a thriving place in the 5th century B.C. The remains of an amphitheater are overgrown with vegetation but still visible, as is the ashlar fortification wall.

Local lore says that the very fine silver sand of the beach was shipped here from Egypt by Cleopatra who wanted its familiar softness when she caroused with her lover mark antony.
Believe it or not, but a respected pilot book informs us that according to a German scholar the sand found here is dissimilar to sand in this region but has the same characteristics as sand found on the shores of North Africa.
